LETTINGS INSIGHT - June 2010
It’s constantly amazing how many unusual events affect letting agents in the UK on a consistent basis. This is the first in a series of short anecdotes, true situations that have astounded, baffled and surprised agents and have ultimately landed on our desks:
“We rented a beautiful 5 bedroom detached house to a Barrister in the West Midlands, who being new to the area and in a hurry to move in and paid the 6 months rent in advance, much to the delight of the Landlord who would receive the balance of the rent on a Let Only Basis. We completed a Instant Credit Check and everything seemed fine.
The very plausible and pleasant Barrister flirted with the girls in the office whilst completing the paperwork on the day of the move in and everything seemed fine until he turned around to me and said that my Tenancy Agreement would not stand up in Court as it was “full of holes”. This struck me as an unusual thing for a man in his position to say and whilst it set my spider senses tingling, the tenancy went ahead as planned.
A few weeks later, we saw in the local press that a Con Man who the Police had been after for some time, had been caught in the West Midlands. He had hired a helicopter to fly himself and his Best Man to his wedding at a plush hotel on a stolen credit card. When the helicopter arrived at the wedding, he was promptly arrested and is currently serving time at Her Majesties pleasure.
I guess the motto of the story, is that if it doesn't feel right, it often isn't!”
